INSIDER DEAL! The Messenger Adelaide Hills Cabernet Sauvignon - Spectacular

This is a special one right here folks and it comes from the producer (Art + Farm Wines) of our highest rated deal ever, the Girls in The Vineyard White Blend.

We’re going to let the winery tell the awesome story of how this wine came to be below but suffice it to say, this wine blew us away. Using the same Cabernet Sauvignon grapes that find their way into the Penfold Bin Series wines with a bit of our absolute favorite variety (Sagrantino) blended in, this easily hits a 10 (94+ points) on our Taste Rating. Even better it’s almost half off through today’s deal!

Here’s the story from the winery:

Many have heard the story about how much beer it takes to make great wine — winemakers slaving away at harvest for months on end in hot, grueling conditions certainly drink a great deal of beer. If you want to buy grapes from the Amadios, you have to eat a ton of pizza. This is not a hardship as family patriarch Caj Amadio has been slinging his peel for more years than anyone can remember, and the results are ample evidence that he is very, very good at his craft. While you’re eating pizza, he is also refilling your wine glass and…asking questions. Lots of bloody questions. You see, Caj does not sell his prized fruit to just anyone.

The Amadio family commenced planting their Kersbrook vineyard in the Adelaide Hills in 1997. Contrary to the popular theme at the time, they started with Cabernet Sauvignon. Chastised by neighbors & industry friends for even thinking about Cab in a cool climate area, they reinforced their seemingly cavalier disregard of currently held convention by carefully selected the warmer, north-facing plots. In short, they planted the Cab anyway. Now, more than 20 years later the Amadio’s foresight is celebrated (quietly by some) as they now produce their own stunning Cabernets from their beautiful sun-soaked property, plus they supply fruit for Penfolds and their highly sought after (and quite expensive) Bin series wines.

Rob McDonald was born and raised in the Adelaide Hills. Leaving home to chase love, life and the love of his life in the USA where he and his wife Kat founded Old Bridge Cellars, the first of an elite group of Aussie wine import companies to bring Australia’s best wines to US shores. Rob and Kat now live in Napa and make a selection of their own wines. Their aptly named winery, Art+Farm Wine translates literally into the art of farming to make great wine.

During a visit to his childhood home a few years ago, Rob caught up with Danniel and Caj Amadio. Over a dinner of Amadio Cabernet and Caj’s legendary artisanal wood fired pizza they confided that a customer for some of their original Block 1A cabernet was having difficulties. Rob became wide-eyed. If a grape customer is having difficulties, could it be that there was some fruit available? Watching the development of the vineyard through the years, Rob had been kicking himself for not securing some of THAT Cabernet back when he might have had the chance. Talk about the right place, right time. And over pizza and wine no less. This is the Cabernet block that everyone knows about, but no one talks about. It’s the secret sauce in many wines, not just Penfolds.

Now there is another twist to this story. The Amadio family has deep Italian roots. When they discovered how good Cabernet grew in their vineyard, they picked another couple slightly warmer spots and planted Italian varieties like Sangiovese, Sagrantino, Barbera, Nero d’Avalo & Montepulciano to name a few. Rob revels in the tradition of wine, yet deeply admires the industry’s iconoclasts who don’t always feel the need to be bound by that tradition. In that vein, it turns out this insanely good Cabernet is even better with a dollop of Sagrantino. While it’s tempting to call it an “Inverted Super Tuscan”, we won’t. But you get the idea.

The wine itself is stunning. Follow along with the mental tennis match here, you get Cabernet Sauvignon, planted in a warmer pocket of a cool region using an earlier ripening clone (SA125) that is known for low yielding, intense fruit & ripe tannins. Block 1A is a funky old double cordon trellis system, whereas the rest of the vineyard is single cordon VSP. The Amadio’s clearly know their stuff, but one must question why the rest of the vineyard is VSP when the best fruit comes off the old double cordon system? (Not that we really give a crap because we have the good stuff.) Ultimately, the process of making this wine is simple: night picked, open and closed fermenters, new and used French oak for 18-24 months. This process is typical of Rob’s philosophy of creating a selection of different mini-lots that give him the best blending options for bottling time.

Speaking of blending, remember the Italian component. Rob has been adding Italian varieties to his California blends for 10+ years. The term he likes to use is to ‘funk them up.’ New world fruit, old world charm. This one has 5% Sagrantino which adds inky dark color, palate weight, rich fruit and delightful spice characters to the Cabernet. We are about to enjoy the fruits of that dinner many years ago.

2018 The Messenger Adelaide Hills Cabernet Sauvignon

The 2018 The Messenger Adelaide Hills Amadio Kersbrook Vineyard Block 1A Cabernet Sauvignon 614 begins with luscious blackberry fruit aromas but you’ll also find plenty of well integrated baking spice, leather, cedar, cigar box and much more.

Everything from the nose works even more beautifully in the mouth and it’s all lifted by the savory depth of that excellent Sagrantino. This is a big hearty Cab with a touch of Italian influence and we love it.

It ends dry, very long and oh so savory. Did we mention that we love this wine?

2018 The Messenger Adelaide Hills Cabernet Back Label

If you’ve had the chance to try a single variety Sagrantino di Montefalco or even the wonderful Montefalco Rosso wines that feature just 10-15% Sagrantino then you know that even a little bit of this deep, dark, tannic and delicious variety goes a long way. (In fact, we love this variety so much we’re headed to Italy next week for the annual Sagrantino Preview.)

The addition here takes this wine to the next level. And while it’s drinking spectacularly right now we’re excited to see how this wine ages over the next few years — if we can somehow keep our hands off of a few bottles!

Here’s what people are saying about our Insider Deals:

Hi Jon, Best thing I ever did is buy wine thru you…not been disappointed with any of them! Thank you SO MUCH!

I am seriously considering having the Insider Deals as my primary go-to. Why did I not do this sooner? Thank you

The only thing I have ever been disappointed in with an Insider Deal is that I didn’t purchase more.

I love this wine I bought from you!!!! Thanks for doing what do do!!!

This an absolutely amazing wine, Jon. And $5 shipping for four bottles? You’ve outdone yourself!

Thanks Jon. We already drank all 6 of the first order so we were ecstatic to see you offering it again. My wife and I both love it.

You are a man after my own heart. I have always looked for the best and least expensive wine and you just made it easier. Cheers!

Hi Jon, well, I did something people have warned about – bought 6 bottles and should have bought 12!

Have had nothing but great bottles since I started ordering your recommendations. Thanks so much!

We’ve gotten in on three of the deals and have been VERY happy with the value. I originally was going to do a wine club thing but the insider deal appeals to me much more.

The $5 or $10 shipping on the Insider Deals is another great part of the deal. We recently paid $27 to a winery in California to ship 6 bottles (same packaging as the insider deals)….yikes!

Just got my 6 bottles and having my first glass. WHY, WHY didn’t I buy a case??!!

I really missed the boat by only getting four bottles of this offer last month. Should have bought least at a case.

My wife and I have really enjoyed getting to know new wines (and better than we used to buy!) Thanks for what you do and providing this service!

Jon – you have to stop offering all of these amazing deals. My self discipline is fading fast!!

I recently took advantage of your offer. So glad I did, and now sorry I did not buy more (like all those quotes on your website!)

The wine is outstanding. I am so glad I bought a case.

Jon, I should have bought more! Delicious!!

I am a Certified Specialist of Wine. I love your deals. You pick great wines!! Kudos to you for getting us great deals!

Wish I would have ordered more!! It was great. Looking back, I wish I didn’t open it at our annual pool party. It’s gone. **Sob**

thanks for the deal…this wine is spectacular for $12.50/bottle. I am used to buying big, bold, young cabs or old vine zins and paying considerably more multiples of this price.

Hi Jon, just had to let you know that I love this wine!!!! Thanks for doing what you do.

I have purchased many times over the last several months and loved the wines!

Seriously amazing deal!!! I love a bold red, and Reverse Wine Snob delivered!!! Perfect for a rainy night!!

AMAZING!! Damn, I should have bought a CASE!!

WOW. Just… wow. Absolutely delicious. If I knew it was going to be this good, I would have bought a case… or two. This was dead-center in the sweet spot of what I like. Thank you!!

I have loved all my RWS deals, can’t wait to get this one.

I know that you don’t need to have ‘customers’ email you every time they like a wine that you have suggested/rated, and I have enjoyed many of your recommendations. But this Tannat was spectacular! Wow! That was amazing!

I finally opened a bottle of this and it did not disappoint. Delicious!!!

Thanks for a great service! We’ve been loving your emails and wine deals!

This insider deal is a great wine!!! So glad I got it!!

My Insider Deal arrived just in time for my celebration tonight and it’s absolutely delicious! Cheers!

Wish I had doubled my order!

I’ve gotten quite a few of these and loved them all — keep them coming!

Wow – this wine is amazing!!! Glad I have two more bottles of it!!

Bought a case wish I had purchased 2-3 cases. Fantastic buy for the price.

This Insider Deal was the best ever. This wine is amazing!!! Strongly recommend.
