Legacy Institute for Financial Education (LIFE) – Lufkin, TX

Awarded $2,500 grant to fund a community garden, specifically the irrigation system and tractor planter.

While LIFE has many programs, they all address one common goal: the end of poverty. LIFE has three departments through which they offer our services to the community. The first is their Financial Opportunity Center, then their LIFE Skills department, and finally a Youth Education department called “Legacy for Youth.”

Rise Against Hunger – Raleigh, NC

Awarded $1,000 grant to help fund Rise Against Hunger’s 2021 COVID Relief and Resilience plan to support 600,000 people worldwide, 325,000 of whom are students in 15 countries.

Rise Against Hunger is growing a global movement to end hunger by empowering communities, nourishing lives, and responding to emergencies. Their 2021 COVID Relief and Resilience Plan consists of two significant efforts:

  1. Sustain Nourishing Lives Initiatives through Local Food Procurement

Funds for local or regional procurement of food commodities will be provided to their impact partners through grants, cash-based assistance, cooperative agreements and other mechanisms. Programming will leverage resources, skills and partnerships with local suppliers, and enhance delivery of a nutrition-rich food basket — including cereals, cooking oil, fresh fruits and vegetables, proteins, sugar, and salt. This will help meet families’ basic needs while injecting cash into fragile economies to ensure stability.

  1. Empower Communities through Sustainable Agriculture

Rise Against Hunger will ensure continued implementation of multi-faceted agricultural development projects to build the capacity of farmers and increase their food production for resilience from economic and climate shocks. Five projects in Malawi, Mali, Senegal, South Sudan, and Zimbabwe will prepare farmers in soil fertility, scarce water, plant spacing, village saving and lending, buyer networking, and diversified diets through vegetable gardens and native plant consumption. These projects also include animal-rearing techniques to increase protein and generate income for other needs, like medical care or school fees.
